March 22, 2020 - World Water Day

World Water Day was established in 1992 at the UN Conference, regarding Environment and Development, held in Rio, Brazil. The topic of World Water Day 2020 was "Water and Climate Change" and their interconnectedness.

Proper management of water resources contributes significantly to reducing floods, droughts, shortages, and pollution, effectively addressing the consequences of climate change and contributing to sustainable development.

The UN also reminds us that water is a key ally of humanity in preventing the transmission of the coronavirus pandemic. "Water and soap against coronavirus" is the updated message of this year's World Water Day.

On the occasion of this year's World Water Day, Mrs. Penelope Pagonis, Senior Director of Health, Safety, Environment and Sustainable Development of the Hellenic Petroleum Group participated in the special issue of the Plant Newsletter with the following statement:

"In the Hellenic Petroleum Group, we are committed to protecting water resources and continuously improving our performance in terms of reducing consumption and increasing water recycling/reuse in our facilities. The proper and responsible use and utilization of natural resources, such as water, throughout their lifecycle, is a business opportunity and a response to our commitment to environmental protection and sustainable development.

To ensure sustainable water management, we apply innovative and best practices and technologies in order to minimize water in our production facilities, to reduce the quantity and improve the quality of wastewater discharged into the aquatic environment.

We aim to ensure responsible and efficient water use and to maintain its quality by following the model of the circular economy. In this way, we contribute substantially to the protection and conservation of water resources and the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals for water (SDG 6 Clean Water and SDG 14 Water Life)".
